This Norton 8” x 2” grinding stone with 1” arbor hole is used for rail head-wash grinding in preparation for a head-wash weld. This grinding stone grinds down the irregularities and defects in the rail prior to a thermit weld. This is a type 1, 6000 RPM Norton brand grinding wheel with a diameter of 8 inches and 2 inches thickness.

Railroads endure significant stress leading to many defects in the rail due to a high rate of wear and tear, which consequently could lead to a shortened life of the rail, or even worse, a derailment.
